Advice

Wisdom worth keeping

Counsel drawn from our sample storytellers—patience, belonging, work, seasons, and community. Replace these with advice from the people you record.

On patience

Patience is not waiting politely. It is staying present while someone becomes who they are meant to be—especially when it is inconvenient.

On starting over

Every September I began again. Age does not excuse you from beginners' humility. Begin again with grace.

On work

Do the work in front of you as if the next generation will inherit it. Often, they will.

On belonging

Home is not only where you were born. It is where your hands have made something that stays.

On community

Ask who is missing from the room before you decide what the room needs. Then go get them—and make space when they arrive.

On persistence

Most victories look like failure until the week they don't. Keep the minutes. Keep showing up.

On seasons

Do not demand spring from someone who is in winter. Sit with them until the light returns—or until they learn to walk in the dark.

On enough

Enough is a warm kitchen, a true friend, and work that leaves the world slightly better than you found it.
